Retinol – does it work?

Retinol is a powerful antioxidant and widely considered to be one of the go to ingredients in our anti-ageing skincare.

Applied to the skin, retinol is converted into retinoid acid, which is a form of vitamin A that is utilised by skin cells to increase the rate of cell turnover and support collagen production. When used correctly it is clinically proven to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin texture, reduce scarring and pigmentation. It’s also great for people with congested or acne skin.

As with many high street skincare products all brands are not the same and you can run the risk of wasting money on the wrong products or be misled by clever marketing. There are different types of Retinol used in skincare products and not all work!

In clinic we recommend that retinol is used as part of the night time routine and ensure that a quality SPF is used during the daytime as retinol can increase skin UV sensitivity. You also need to build your skins tolerability so a gradual treatment plan is advised. As mentioned, retinol is a powerful antioxidant but it needs to be used properly. It is not suitable for everyone, however, with the correct product and application the results can be impressive.

We’re happy to answer any questions or DM us if you would like to discuss incorporating retinol into your skincare routine.
